Acne Causes in Adults

Acne is only for teenagers.

Unfortunately, this is a myth that many adults wish were true. The reality is that at least 50% of women and approximately 25% of men are affected by acne.

What are the acne causes in adults?

Causes for adult acne can vary and can be any one of the following.

Hormones: Acne caused by hormonal imbalances is mainly experienced in women from 20-25, but can continue well into the 30’s.  One of the most common culprits of the acne is the over stimulation of the sebaceous glands by the androgens in the female body.  The most frequent period in a woman’s life when this type of acne is experience is during menstrual cycles as well as pregnancy.

Over Production of Sebum:Once the androgens stimulate the sebaceous gland, excess sebum is produced.  As the sebum travels to the skins surface through the follicles it also becomes mixed with dead skin cells and bacteria which increases the possibility of the pores within the skin clogging and resulting in acne.

Acne Cosmetica:Not surprisingly, acne can also be caused by cosmetics. Poorly formulated cosmetics, heavy or greasy can result in clogged pores and trap bacteria, dirt and oil within the skin.  Covering the acne with additional makeup can make the situation even worse.

This types of acne normally only affects the area of the skin where the cosmetics or certain types of lotion are applied.  The acne first develops as a rash and becomes mall, itchy bumps. In order to avoid Acne Cosmetica, purchase skin care products that are less likely to clog your pores such as non-comedogenic or non acnegenic cosmetics.

Stress:Stress is really an indirect cause of acne.  Whenever your body experiences stress, the adrenal glands begin to release a hormone called cortisol into the blood stream.  With the release of the cortisol, extra oil is produced by the sweat glands and is released into the skin.  With the production of oil, the cycle begins with the oil mixing with the dead skin cells in your pores and traps the bacteria inside.  The result is acne.

Heredity:Current study has shown that individuals are much more likely to have acne if they have parents who have experience adult acne.

Environment:Environmental Work problems cant expose the pores and skin to higher levels of irritants, humidity and pollutants, which can cause acne break outs.

Learning what causes acne in adults can help you take preventive measures to help reduce impact acne may have in your life.
